Things I actually light up about.

This is not a list of hobbies I vaguely dabble in. These are the things I return to on weekends, read about at odd hours, and drag into conversations whether or not they are welcome.

Some of it overlaps with my work. Most of it started long before the work did. All of it is genuine.

The list

chip music & trackers/

Writing music on hardware that wasn't designed to be a music studio, four channels, a few kilobytes, and a hard limit on everything. Those constraints are the point, trackers are the tool, and that's how I got started.

Armed with a spreadsheet crossed with a sequencer, I've been composing chip music since the Amiga days. You can hear most of it at asce1062.github.io .

reverse engineering/

Not malicious. Just curious. Started with a Casio Databank when I was younger. Poking through every menu looking for edges. Better tools now, about the same amount of patience.

Games are a particularly rich vein. Cheat codes, the easter eggs, debug menus left in shipping builds, messages buried in ROM nobody was supposed to find. Modding goes a step further. Understanding the game well enough to change it, add to it, or break it in interesting ways. I have spent more hours than I should admit in game memory and modding communities .

Mobile hardware took this somewhere else entirely. Unlocking bootloaders, building custom kernels, porting AOSP to devices the manufacturer stopped caring about. It is the same instinct applied to a different substrate. If the vendor won't ship a security patch, build your own ROM. I published several custom Android builds on XDA Forums back when that was the only way to get a supported Android on hardware people still used every day.

web craft & personal sites/

The web is still the most open publishing platform humans have built and personal websites are the proof. Sites with actual opinions, personality quirks, and craft put into them. Sites where you can tell a real person lives there. The IndieWeb movement gets this right. Own your content, own your presence, link to actual humans.

This site is my contribution. The source is public. That is intentional. See also: how it is built.

security & auth/

Security is what happens when you take reverse engineering seriously and then start building things for other people. Understanding how things break makes you better at building things that don't. I design and maintain auth systems, think about threat models, and try to leave every system a little more honest about its attack surface than I found it.

If you found something on this site that shouldn't be there, , here is where to go .

games/

Games were the first software that made me feel like computers could be magic. Playing on the Amiga, then consoles, then PC. My wheelhouse is FPS, MMO, RPG, looter shooters, and auto-battlers. If there's loot and a progression loop, I'm probably in.

Borderlands is the franchise I keep coming back to despite everything. The writing and gunplay in the first two games set a bar the series has struggled to clear since, but I still show up. Right now I'm putting time into Teamfight Tactics (made it to Diamond, Master next set?) and The First Descendant (free-to-play looter shooter, exceptionally well executed).

I make video content about games occasionally. YouTube. Find me on Steam and PSN .

open source & building in the open/

Code that other people can read, use, and improve is code that outlasts its original context. I maintain a few small things, contribute to tools I actually use, and default to sharing over hoarding where I can.

Most of what I maintain is on GitHub .

Also in the orbit

Things I follow, read about, or get distracted by. In no particular order.

  • Technology: I've always been a big fan of computers, gadgets, learning about tech, working on tech, talking about it, you name it.
  • Sci-Fi movies: I have a list I need to publish.
  • Looper: The best movie of all time.
  • Anime: I have a list I need to publish.
  • Card games: I'm particularly enjoying "Game Chafu" by Manda . See how it's played on YouTube .
  • Matcha ice cream 🤤

If something on this list overlaps with something you are into, I would genuinely like to hear about it. Email is the best way. Or leave something in the guestbook if you prefer.
